Resumen

Es un objetivo común de filólogos, geógrafos e historiadores recopilar y estudiar la toponimia general del territorio como fuente de información y con el fin de preservarla del olvido. En este artículo el historiador fija su atención en el topónimo La Calafata, ubicado en el municipio de Breña Alta en la isla de La Palma. Con ayuda de una variada documentación de archivo de carácter público y privado, estudia en profundidad su origen y significación histórica. Se trata de un topónimo de apodo feminizado que remite al oficio de calafatear barcos de vela. Calafate era el mote de la familia Felipe Carmona, marinos de Santa Cruz de La Palma que destacaron en el tráfico marítimo entre Canarias y América con barcos propios en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII y primera mitad del siglo XIX.

It is a common objective of philologists, geographers and historians to collect and study the toponymy of the territory as a source of information and in order to preserve it from oblivion. In this article the historian fixes his attention on the place-name La Calafata, located in the municipality of Breña Alta on the island of La Palma. With the help of a variety of public and private archival documentation, he studies in depth its origin and historical significance. It is a feminized nickname that refers to the craft of caulking sailboats. Calafate (Caulker) was the nickname of the Felipe Carmona family, sailors from Santa Cruz de La Palma, who excelled in maritime traffic between the Canary Islands and America with their own ships during the second half of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century.
