Lo que no se enseña, se olvida: colores y tintes vegetales en la cultura tradicional canaria / What is not taught is forgotten: colours and dyes in the traditional canarian culture

Resumen

Los colores son a menudo elementos simbólicos que representan a las culturas que los utilizan. La predilección por determinados tonos puede llegar incluso a transformarse en un lenguaje visual claramente desde la Prehistoria. Estrechamente asociado a este tema se encuentra la práctica del teñido. En línea con otros trabajos anteriores presentados en este mismo evento, en esta ocasión dejamos de lado el mundo aborigen para centrarnos en el conocimiento, uso y evolución del conjunto de especies que desde la Conquista de las Islas tenemos constancia se han utilizado con estos fines. Nos hemos propuesto el objetivo de crear, en colaboración con otros colegas, un corpus técnico que vaya más allá de un listado de especies vegetales con capacidades tintóreas.

Colours are often symbolic elements that represent the cultures that use them. The predilection for certain tones can even become a clearly identifying visual language as, for example, happens with red, black and white that are repeated continuously since prehistory. Closely associated with this subject is the practice of dyeing. A constant activity throughout history until, at the end of the 19th century, the chemical industry came to replace the traditional systems of preparation, obtaining and processing of colors extracted from plant species, plants and fungi by anilines and other dyes. In line with previous works presented in this same event, this time we set aside the aboriginal world to focus on the knowledge, use and evolution of the set of species that since the Conquest of the Islands have been used for these purposes. We have set ourselves the objective of creating, in collaboration with other colleagues, a technical corpus that goes beyond a list of plant species with dyeing capabilities.
