La ilegitimidad en Tirajana durante el siglo XVII / Tirajana’s illegitimacy during the 17th century

Resumen

Los registros parroquiales de bautismos, de acuerdo con las normas eclesiásticas reflejan claramente los nacimientos ilegítimos. Siguiendo estas fuentes, que en la parroquia de San Bartolomé de Tirajana tienen su comienzo en 1597, hemos analizado el fenómeno de la ilegitimidad, en sus diferentes variantes, así como su evolución a lo largo de todo el siglo XVII, lo que nos permite hacer una comparación con lo sucedido en otras jurisdicciones parroquiales, y determinar si hay diferencia entre ámbitos urbanos y rurales, teniendo además en cuenta la lejanía y determinado aislamiento de Tirajana durante el siglo XVII. La reconstrucción familiar será el indicador de la persistencia de algunas mujeres en la procreación ilegítima, pero también si el fenómeno acompaña a los así nacidos al reflejarse cuando, pasado el tiempo, contraen matrimonio, o si hay una ocultación en los registros de defunción, al no reflejar niños ilegítimos que fallecieron a temprana edad, e incluso en momentos próximos a su nacimiento, lo que además informará del grado de supervivencia de estas criaturas.

Parochial registers of baptism clearly show illegitimate births, according to ecclesiastic rules. Following these sources, set for the first time in 1597 at San Bartolomé de Tirajana´s parish church, we have analysed the phenomenon of illegitimacy in its different ways as well as its evolution throughout the 17th Century. This makes it possible for us to compare what happened in other parochial jurisdictions and consider if there is any difference between the urban and rural fields. The fact that Tirajana was far away and isolated during the 17th Century has also been born in mind. Family Reconstruction would be a sign of the persistence of some women on illegitimate procreation. This phenomenon is also shown by people who were born illegitimately and who, years later, got married and it is also shown by some hiding in the death registers. For instance, by not showing illegitimate children who died at an early age or just after they were born. This would also show the degree of survival of these creatures.
