La guerra entre Portugal y Castilla en los años setenta del siglo XV provocó que los castellanos enfocaran su interés por la costa atlántica, hasta ese momento coto privado de los lusos. La guerra se extendió al Atlántico y tanto las Islas Canarias que estaban por conquistar como la costa de Guinea cobraron una importancia estratégica nueva en el conflicto.
