Este En el trabajo se tratará de analizar el origen, estructura y función de la figura de Mami Wata como diosa de la emigración. Aunque no se agota en este aspecto, se trata de una diosa que se representa actualmente como sirena, mitad mujer y mitad pez. Esta imagen aparece en África a raíz de la llegada de los portugueses que llevaban esculturas de sirenas que poco a poco fueron aplicadas a deidades acuáticas que aparecen sobre todo en África del Oeste especialmente en el delta del Níger y en la costa de Benín. A partir del siglo XVI, Mami Wata aparece ya en Surinam. También juega un papel importante en el vudú haitiano y dominicano, así como en Cuba, Brasil y otros lugares. Mami Wata es venerada en algunas zonas de la India por los hindúes que la relacionan con la diosa Laksmi. El carácter global de Mami Wata, no está solo presente en el Atlántico sino también en el Índico. Este carácter global se manifiesta también en la capacidad de Mami Wata de traspasar las fronteras de la religión, el Cristianismo, el Islam y el Hinduismo.

This attempts to analyze the origin, structure and function of the figure of Mami Wata as a goddess of emigration, although there is an aspect of her being represented at present as a siren, half woman and half fish.
