La atención de la Historiografía sobre los preparativos de la expedición de Magallanes se han centrado en los aspectos hacendísticos y de logística, dada la documentación aportada. Existe también otra faceta menos conocida, que es la relación del navegante con la iglesia trianera del monasterio de Nuestra Señora de la Victoria, lugar donde escuchó la última misa en Sevilla antes de partir y donde juró obediencia y fidelidad al rey de Castilla. Magallanes dotó con una importante cantidad al monasterio antes de comenzar su viaje. ¿Por qué escogió este monasterio? ¿Qué relación tenía el portugués con él? ¿Cuál fue su legado y qué pasó con él? En esta comunicación trataremos de dar respuesta a este aspecto oscuro de la biografía del personaje.
Historiography’s attention to the preparations for the Magellan expedition has focused on the economic and logistical aspects, given the documentation provided. There is also another lesser-known facet, which is the navigator’s relationship with the church of the monastery of Our Lady of Victory, where he heard the last Mass in Seville before leaving and where he swore obedience and fidelity to the King of Castile. Magellan endowed the monastery with a significant amount before beginning his journey. Why did he choose this monastery? What was the Portuguese’s relationship with him? What was his legacy and what happened to him? In this communication we will try to respond to this dark aspect of the character’s biography.
