Resumen

En el XX Coloquio de Historia Canario Americana, dábamos a conocer un interesante hallazgo datado de 1920 y que correspondía a una serie de ilustraciones que el pintor gomero José Aguiar realizó para el poemario Salterio de su paisano Pedro Bethencourt Padilla. En dicho trabajo advertíamos la modernidad de las xilografías con las que este muralista imprimió un carácter casi simbolista a los versos yuvistas que componían el libro. Sin embargo, hemos conseguido localizar un segundo libro ilustrado por el artista canario en 1928 y titulado Un rato a locos, obra del escritor Antonio Domínguez. Ocho años después el pintor muestra un cambio total en su registro: pasa del simbolismo a preludiar los rasgos expresionistas que le definirán a partir de finales de la década de 1930, pero adelantándose dos lustros a esta particular manera de ilustrar varios pasajes de este libro.

At the XX Coloquio de Historia Canario Americana, we unveiled an interesting find dating from 1920 and that corresponded to a series of illustrations that the Gomeran painter José Aguiar made for the collection of poems Salterio by his countryman Pedro Bethencourt Padilla. In this work we noticed the modernity of the woodcuts with which this muralist gave an almost symbolist character to the yuvistas verses that made up the book. However, we have managed to locate a second book illustrated by the artist Canarian in 1928 and entitled Un rato a locos, the work of the writer Antonio Domínguez. Eight years later, the painter shows a total change in his register: he goes from symbolism to prelude the expressionist traits that will define him from the end of the 1930s, but two decades ahead of this particular way of illustrating various passages in this book.
