De secretarios y secretos: los vigilantes protectores de la memoria escrita del Santo Oficio canario (siglo XVI) / Secretaries and secrets: the guards protecting the written memory of the Canary Holy Office (16th century)
Resumen
La actividad desarrollada por el Santo Oficio en Canarias entre los siglos XVI y XIX, ha sido analizada a lo largo del tiempo de manera pormenorizada por diferentes historiadores. Sin embargo, no ha sido objeto del mismo detenido estudio la actividad emprendida por los oficiales adscritos a la institución en el distrito inquisitorial canario. En este articulo nos aproximaremos al estudio de la figura del secretario del secreto durante el siglo XVI. Su papel fue esencial en la escritura, redacción y validación de los documentos. Eran, además, vigilantes protectores del secreto y depositarios de la memoria escrita del tribunal. A través de la documentación conservada en El Museo Canario (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) y en el Archivo Histórico Nacional (Madrid) recuperaremos la memoria de los secretarios del secreto, conoceremos sus nombres y sus trayectorias, además de establecer las relaciones personales que existían entre ellos.
The activity carried out by the Holy Office in the Canary Islands between the 16th and 19th centuries has been analyzed over time in detail by different historians. However, the activity carried out by officers attached to the institution in the Canarian inquisitorial district has not been the subject of the same detailed analysis. In this article we will approach the study of the figure of the secretary of the secret during the sixteenth century. His role was essential in the writing, composition and validation of documents. They were, moreover, custodians of secrecy and custodians of the court’s written memory. Through the documentation preserved in El Museo Canario (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) and in the Archivo Histórico Nacional (Madrid) we will recover the memory of the secretaries of the secret, we will know their names and their trajectories, in addition to establishing the personal relationships that existed between them.
