«With the new names, the country changed». Classifications, mixing categories and colonial affiliation / expansion in the Canary Islands
Resumen
Las Islas Canarias son forzadas con la Conquista a entrar en un proceso de filiación cristiana que es expansivo, creando una nueva sociedad colonial. Con el paso del tiempo es incontrovertible que la mezcla de distintas poblaciones y culturas ha dado pie a una población que se considera «mestiza». Sin embargo, oficialmente nunca se crearon categorías de mezcla para codificar a la población. Este ensayo interroga las nociones de mezcla usadas en otras coordenadas de filiación/expansión cristiana y explora algunas hipótesis sobre la asimilación y aculturación propiciada en Canarias, al tiempo que también cuestiona esos mismos conceptos.
The Canary Islands are forced by the Conquest to enter a expansive process of Christian filiation that creates a new colonial society. It is now beyond dispute that the mixing of different backgrounds and cultures has led to its people to consider themselfs «hybrid». However, mixing categories were never officially created to code the population. This essay questions the notions of mixture used in other spaces of Christian filiation/expansion and exploring some hypotheses about the assimilation and acculturation promoted in the Canary Islands, while also questioning those same concepts.
