Las islas atlánticas portuguesas en la planificación militar británica durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial / Portuguese atlantic islands in the british military planning during the Second World War

El objetivo es realizar una aproximación a la planificación militar británica sobre Azores, Madeira y Cabo Verde durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, cuestión trabajada por la historiografía portuguesa, en la que todavía es posible profundizar más. A pesar de la tradicional alianza anglo-portuguesa, al menos desde mayo de 1940 y hasta el otoño de 1943 el alto mando británico estudió la ocupación de estas islas. Con el fin de presentar una visión de conjunto, se ha consultado el fondo del Gabinete de Guerra (War Cabinet) en los National Archives (Kew, Reino Unido), especialmente la serie del Comité de Planificación Conjunta (Joint Planning Staff). Entre las principales conclusiones a las que ha llegado esta investigación destaca la revalorización estratégica de Azores como alternativa a Gibraltar y el dilema entre las necesidades estratégicas y las consideraciones diplomáticas al tomar una decisión sobre estos planes.
The objective is to make an approach to British military planning on the Azors, Madeira and Cape Verdes Islands during the Second World War. This question has been worked by Portuguese historiography, but it’s posible a deeper study. Despite Anglo-Portuguese Alliance, at least since May 1940 and until autumn 1943, British high command studied the occupation of these islands. To take a general view, the documents of the War Cabinet in the National Archives (Kew, United Kingdom), specially the Joint Planning Staff series, have been analyzed. Among the main conclusions in this research, it’s to be pointed out the strategic value of the Azors as an alternative to Gibraltar, and the dilemma between strategic requirements and diplomatic considerations to take a decission on these plans.
