Resumen

El desarrollo del nacionalismo y el independentismo en Canarias es esencial para comprender la historia contemporánea de las islas, especialmente durante los últimos cincuenta años. El abundante número de publicaciones que han ido surgiendo sobre estos temas es indicativo del interés que generan. El objeto de este trabajo es, por una parte, hacer un balance de lo publicado, y, por otro, integrarlo dentro de un discurso histórico coherente en el que ambas realidades se entienden dentro un contexto más amplio: el de los grandes movimientos nacionalistas e independentistas mundiales que, a partir del siglo XIX, le sirvieron de referencia o paradigma.

The development of the nationalistic and separatist movement in the Canary Islands is essential to understand the contemporary history of them, especially during the last fifty years. The abundant amount of publications that have emerged on these topics is indicative of the interest they generate. The purpose of the present work is twofold: to take stock of what has been published, and to integrate it into a coherent historical discourse in which both realities are understood within a broader context: the context of the great worldwide nationalist and pro-independence movements that, starting in the 19th century, served as a reference or paradigm.
