Resumen

A finales del siglo XIX surgieron, en paralelo al higienismo, corrientes de pensamiento que asociaban la salud a valores más próximos a lo que hoy entendemos como bienestar social (una dieta saludable, el deporte, el valor del aire puro y el agua potable, el arbolado, etc.). En este contexto, tal y como había sucedido en otros países de Europa, en España y en especial tras la pandemia de gripe de 1918, proliferó con cierto entusiasmo la corriente naturista y vegetarianista y con ellas las primeras sociedades que establecían la importancia de la relación entre el individuo y su entorno ambiental. Un ejemplo de ello fue la Sociedad vegetariano-naturista de Gran Canaria, que pretendió difundir los principios de estos nuevos movimientos a través de la revista Atlántida y que contó con la pluma de reconocidos médicos de ámbito nacional e internacional, posicionando a las islas en un marco de pensamiento de trascendencia global.

At the end of the 19th century, parallel to hygienism, currents of thought emerged that associated health with values closer to what we now understand as social welfare (a healthy diet, sports, the value of clean air and drinking water, woodland, etc). In this context, as had happened in other European countries, in Spain, especially after the 1918 flu pandemic, the naturist and vegetarian currents proliferous with some enthusiasm, and with them the first societies that established the importance of the relationship between the individual and his or her environment. An example of this was the Vegetarian-Naturist Society of Gran Canaria, which sought to spread the principles of these new movements through the magazine Atlántida and which had was written by renowned national and international doctors, positioning the islands in a framework of thought of global transcendence.
