Resumen

Este ensayo analiza una obra de Luis de la Cruz y Ríos que no refieren ni estudian algunos biógrafos del maestro: el Monumento del Jueves Santo que pintó para la parroquia del Puerto de la Cruz, ya desparecido. Se trata de un trabajo documentado en 1808 y resulta coetáneo a los lienzos que concluyó para decorar el retablo del Gran Poder de Dios en el mismo templo, que su padre Manuel Antonio de la Cruz renovaba entonces. El análisis ayuda a descubrir el sentido iconográfico de dicho conjunto, los modelos que el artista empleó para darle forma y el trasfondo que adquiría en el marco litúrgico de una Semana Santa renovada bajo el ideario de la Ilustración. Los documentos aportados permiten conocer la dedicación de De la Cruz a la hermandad sacramental de dicha parroquia, de la que fue un miembro activo a principios del siglo XIX.

This paper analyzes a work completed by Luis de la Cruz y Ríos that some of his biographers don’t refer to or study: the Holy Week Monument that he painted for the parish of Puerto de la Cruz, now disappeared. It is a commision documented in 1808 and is contemporary with the pictures that he completed to decorate the altarpiece of the Gran Poder de Dios in the same temple, which his father Manuel Antonio de la Cruz was renovating at the time. The analysis help us to discover the iconographic meaning of this artwork, the models that the artist used to shape it and the value that it acquired in the liturgical framework of a renewed Holy Week with the ideology of the Enlightenment. The documents provided reveal the dedication of De la Cruz to the sacramental brotherhood of the same parish, of which he was a member at the beginning of the 19th century.
