Los expedientes de soltería y viudedad como fuente para el estudio del S. XIX en Canarias / Single state and widowhood expedient as source for the study along XIX century in Canary Islands

Resumen

Los expedientes de solterías y viudedades son documentos que tienen un gran valor como fuente para el conocimiento de nuestro pasado. Estos documentos están guardados en los Archivos Diocesanos de las islas Canarias y eran documentos necesarios para poder contraer matrimonio o demostrar el estado de viudedad. La importancia de estos Archivos radica en la gran variedad de información que nos ofrecen: historia social, económica, estadística, etc. Podemos observar los diferentes parámetros en los movimientos migratorios que suceden en todo el siglo XIX y que variarán de una isla a otra en las edades. Los expedientes nos darán datos específicos sobre sistemas de propiedad o cultivo de la tierra, formas de cosecha o la introducción de nuevos cultivos. Se verán reflejados los acontecimientos más importantes ocurridos en las islas en este periodo: llegada de enfermedades contagiosas y desastres naturales. Desde que salía cualquier persona de su lugar de origen, ya tenía que demostrar al regresar, que no tenía ningún impedimento si quería contraer nupcias.

Single state and widowhood expedients are very important documents as source of people history. Those expedients are protected at Diocese Registry from Canary Island and with them we can know the real state of people in order to get married or to demonstrate widowhood. The importance of these registries is the amount of information which offer us: Social, Economic History and Stadistic and so on. The different parameter in the migratory movements along XIX century can be also observed here. They will vary in the different islands when talking about age. Expedients will teach us specific information about property systems or cultivation, different ways of cultivation and the introduction of growing. The most important events occurred at the islands that moment are also reflected here such as: contagious illness and natural tragedies. Since people moved from their birth place, they had to demonstrate that they didn’t have any impediment to get married.
