Resumen

Siguiendo nuestra línea de investigación habitual (la extensa bibliografía inglesa sobre Canarias) en esta ocasión comentaremos otra obra literaria de ficción, escrita en lengua inglesa y relacionada con el archipiélago canario, que hasta ahora no habíamos registrado en nuestra bibliografía. Se trata de la obra titulada The tenth year of the ship. A novel, publicada en Londres en 1962 por el prestigioso escritor británico Norman Lewis. En esta obra desfilan una serie de personajes que representan tanto a los nativos isleños como a miembros de la colonia inglesa asentada en Vedra, una isla canaria imaginaria, si bien se nombran otros lugares reales, como Tenerife o Las Palmas. Los distintos comentarios que Lewis va insertando en la narración nos dan algunas pistas sobre su visión e impresiones tanto de las islas como de los canarios.

Following our main research line –that of the wide English bibliography on the Canaries– this paper focuses on another literary and fictional work written in English and closely related with the Canary Islands. It is a book titled The tenth year of the ship. A novel, published in 1962 by the prestigious British writer Norman Lewis, which we had not registered so far. In this novel we find a number of characters who represent both native Canarians and members of the British colony settled in Vedra, an imaginary island of the Canarian group, although real places like Tenerife or Las Palmas are also mentioned. In his writing Lewis includes a series of observations which give us some clues about his impressions about the Canary Islands and their inhabitants.
