Resumen

La conferencia intenta comparar las trayectorias delos mundos atlánticos de España y Portugal durantela época colonial. Explica que la diferencia másllamativa en las primeras fases de la colonizaciónes la relativa lentitud con que la Corona portuguesaestableció su control sobre sus nuevas posesionesal otro lado del Atlántico y sugiere algunas posiblescausas del desfase. Se compara igualmente elproceso de evangelización para después considerarla época de la unión de las dos Coronas entre 1580y 1640, que se representa como el momento demáxima convergencia entre los dos Atlánticos,gracias en gran parte a las actividades de losmercaderes portugueses, muchos de ellosconversos. Con la restauración de Portugal comoreino independiente Brasil, a base de la exportaciónde azúcar y del oro descubierto en el interior delpaís, tiene el camino abierto para el desarrolloeconómico y la expansión territorial del siglo XVIII. Se comparan las reformas borbónicas en el imperiode las Indias con las del marqués de Pombaldurante la segunda mitad del siglo para terminarcon una discusión de las distintas trayectoriastomadas por los dos imperios transatlánticos aprincipios del siglo XIX.

The purpose of this talk is to compare thetrajectories of the Spanish and Portuguese Atlanticworlds during the colonial period. The moststriking difference in the first phase of colonizationis the relative slowness of the Portuguese crown intaking control of its transatlantic possessions, andpossible reasons for this are suggested. Acomparison of the evangelizing process in Spanishand Portuguese America is followed by adiscussion of the period of the Union of theCrowns between 1580 and 1640, the period ofmaximum convergence between the two Atlanticworlds, thanks in large measure to the activities of Portuguese merchants, many of them conversos.With the restoration of Portuguese independence,the export of sugar and of the gold discovered inthe Brazilian interior makes possible the colony’seconomic and territorial expansion in theeighteenth century. The Bourbon reforms in theSpanish Indies in the second half of the century arecompared with those introduced by the marquis ofPombal, and the essay ends with a discussion of thedifferent trajectories taken by the two transatlanticempires at the start of the nineteenth century.
