Resumen

La presente comunicación destaca la aventuratransoceánica de los canarios que viajaron aAmérica, analizando las relaciones epistolares delsiglo XVIII de Adolfo Arbelo, el padrón del virreyconde de Revillagigedo de 1791 y los expedientesde la Inquisición del AGN entre otras fuentes; seevalúa la situación de los isleños ya ubicados en loscuarteles del puerto de Veracruz y sus redesmercantiles. Adicionado a lo anterior, se desvela auna cultura canaria que su arribó al Méxicocolonial, nos se supedita al espacio marítimo, sinoque avanza tierra adentro a sitios como SanCristóbal de Tlacotalpan, lugar emblemático fueconsiderado por los indios el Tlalocano, su paraísoterrenal. Allí plantaron la veneración a laCandelaria, que resulta fácil por el sincretismo delculto prehispánico a la diosa del aguaChachiuhtlicue, Nuestra Señora de la faldaturquesa o diosa de los mares.
