Voces del azúcar en la documentación canaria del siglo XVI / The language of the sugar industry in Canary documents of the XVI Century

Resumen

Señalaba Manuel Moreno Fraginals que “Lamanufactura esclavista, la gran plantación, tuvo unespecial sistema de signos lingüísticos, no compiladohasta ahora, y que el historiador tiene la necesidad dedescifrar si quiere interpretar correctamente losdocumentos de la época y la época misma”. Siguiendoesta premisa del gran investigador cubano, hemosplanteado un proyecto interdisciplinar en el quehistoriadores y lingüistas abordamos juntos ladocumentación original de la industria azucarera con elfin de llegar a establecer un corpus con el vocabulariomás representativo de los ingenios azucareros canariosdel siglo XVI. Desde el punto de vista histórico esterepertorio puede ser importante, tanto por ladocumentación transcrita (esencialmente inventariosde ingenios) como por la posibilidad de contar con unmaterial de primera mano que facilitará la lectura y lacomprensión de otros muchos documentos quecontienen el mismo tipo de léxico.

Manuel Moreno Fraginals explained that“Manufacturing, using slave labour on the greatplantations, developed a specialized system oflinguistic terms, not compiled until now, which thehistorian needs to decipher in order to interpretcorrectly the documents of the epoch and the epochitself”. Following this line of thought by the greatCuban researcher we have organized aninterdisciplinary project in which historians andlinguists together examine the original documentationof the sugar industry in order to establish a body of themost representative vocabulary of the sugar mills inthe Canary Islands during the XVI century. From thehistorical point of view this could prove important,both for the transcription of the documents themselves(basically inventories of the sugar mills) and alsobecause it will offer first hand material which will helpus to read and understand many other documentswhich contain the same type of vocabulary.
