Resumen

El presente artículo pone de relieve el control que lospoderes económicos dominantes en Tenerife(principalmente la gran terratenencia agrícola) ejercendurante la primera mitad del siglo XX sobre la vidaisleña, estableciendo una compleja trabazón de redesclientelares, marcadas en gran medida por lazosfamiliares, que les permiten controlar las tresestructuras administrativas existentes en la provincia(en la base de la pirámide se sitúan los ayuntamientosmunicipales, en lugar intermedio los CabildosInsulares y el Gobierno civil, y en la cúspide losdiputados en Cortes). Resaltamos la gran capacidad deadaptación que tiene este bloque tradicionalmentedominante a los cambios de regímenes políticos que sevan sucediendo en España, durante la primera mitaddel siglo XX, para mantener de manera, más o menosinalterada, su dominio sobre una inmensa mayoría depoblación que sobrevive analfabeta, miserable ysojuzgada en estas islas alejadas física y mentalmentedel resto del país en las aguas del Atlántico.

This article highlights the control that the dominanteconomic powers in Tenerife (mainly the largeagricultural land tenure) exercised during the first halfof the twentieth century on island life, establishing acomplex interlocking of patronage networks, markedlargely by family ties, which allow them to control thethree existing administrative structures in the province(at the base of the pyramid are located municipalcouncils, rather intermediate the Island Councils andthe Government civil, and at the top of Deputies inParliament). We emphasize the great adaptability thatthis block has traditionally dominant political regimechanges that are happening in Spain, during the firsthalf of the twentieth century, to keep so, more or lessunchanged, its dominion over a vast majority ofsurviving population illiterate, miserable and subduedin these remote islands physically and mentally fromthe rest of the country on the Atlantic.
