En el presente estudio se procede a analizar laevolución institucional de la figura del regente de laReal Audiencia de Canarias durante el AntiguoRégimen: creación en 1566, ámbito competencial yprincipales razones de su supresión. La autoridadregental desempeñó sus funciones en el tribunal desde1566 hasta 1808, exceptuando las etapas 1589-1594 y1629-1718, en los que actuó la Capitanía General deCanarias, siendo su primer titular en 1589 el general deLa Cueva. La suprema autoridad castrense ejerció loscargos de jefe militar, gobernador y presidente de laAudiencia desplazando a los regentes. Comosingularidad en la historia administrativa delarchipiélago, nos centramos en el año 1718, momentoen que se volvió a dotar a la Audiencia de la plaza deregente, autoridad que, por primera vez, coexistió conel capitán general el cual, por derecho propio, asumióla presidencia. Las relaciones entre ambas autoridadesse caracterizaron por constantes conflictos.
This study analyses the historical changes in the figureof the Regent of the Royal Court of Justice of theCanary Islands during the early administrative period,covering its creation in 1566, its sphere of competenceand the main reasons for its disappearance. TheRegents performed their functions in the Court from1566 to 1808, except for the periods 1589-1594 and1629-1718, when the General Captaincy of the CanaryIslands took over this role. The first person to hold theposition of Regent, in 1589, was General de La Cueva.The highest military authority held the positions ofmilitary chief, governor and president of the Court ofJustice, taking the place of the Regents. A uniquemoment in the administrative history of the Islandsoccurred in 1718, when the position of Regent wasreinstated at the Court of Justice. For the first time, thisfigure coexisted with the General Captain, who, in hisown right, assumed control as President of the Court.Relations between the two authorities werecharacterised by continual conflicts.
