Resumen

La imagen que Canarias transmite de sí misma, impulsada por las obras de arte o la publicidad, en la mayoría de los casos, no es más que un estereotipo. La vinculación que este territorio ha tenido con la mitología grecolatina y otras leyendas a lo largo de la historia, además de sus condiciones climáticas y geográficas, le ha hecho ganarse el sobrenombre de “Islas Afortunadas”; describiéndose constantemente su paisaje en términos de “paradisíaco”. El cine, como otras artes, ha colaborado enormemente a la difusión de dicho estereotipo, exaltando generalmente la imagen de la región. Sin embargo, existen un grupo de filmes realizados en Canarias que pese a usar sus bellos paisajes, no responden a esa paradisíaca imagen. El cine fantástico filmado en las islas, utiliza la naturaleza del archipiélago para crear otros mundos diferentes haciendo que este idílico lugar se convierta en un territorio hostil y peligroso.

The image of Canary Islands transmited by itself and stimulated by art and advertising are frequently just an stereotype. This historical visual cliche has been linked to the greco-roman mithology and other legends. In addition, the islands are provided with a special location and a very good climate. Because of it, they are known also as the “Fortunate Islands” and they have been described as frequently in terms of “paradisiac”. The films, as another pieces of art, has contributed to spreading this stereotype, most of the times like an exalting of the image of the region. However, there are films made in Canary Islands that, even using its beatiful landscapes, just present a not really paradisiac image. Fantastic films uses the nature of this archipelago to create different worlds, making the place turn into a dangerous and hostil territory.
