A contribuçâo dos Açores para la construçâo do mundo atlántico: cidades portuárias insulares / The contribution of the Azores towards the construction of the Atlantic world: island port-cities

Resumen

É inquestionável a importância das ilhas e dos arquipélagos ao longo da história na articulação entre as massas continentais e os espaços oceânicos. Na presente comunicação, é nosso objectivo apresentar, em linhas gerais, a contribuição dos Açores e, em particular, dos seus principais portos – as cidades de Angra e Ponta Delgada e a vila da Horta – para a construção do mundo atlântico entre os séculos XV e XVIII, destacando as conjunturas históricas que pautaram a dinâmica de cada porto.

It is undeniable that islands and archipelagos played an important role in articulating the continents and the oceanic spaces. In this paper, it is our aim to present a general overview regarding the contribution of the Azores and namely of its main port-cities – the cities of Angra and Ponta Delgada and the town of Horta – towards the construction of the Atlantic world from the 15th century to the 18th century, stressing the historical circumstances that shaped the dynamics of each harbour.
