Funchal y Las Palmas – Hombres del mar de aquí y allá / Funchal e Las Palmas – Homens-mar de cá e de lá / Funchal and Las Palmas – Madeiran and Canarian sea...

Resumen

Alrededor de los puertos de Funchal y de Las Palmas, surgen una serie de personajes que hacen del mar y del movimiento de los navíos, su principal fuente de subsistencia. De entre las muchas actividades que se organizan alrededor de la llegada y de la partida de los barcos, que traen el mundo a la(s) isla(s), destacamos la actividad del cambullón, por la importancia que tuvieron en la sobrevivencia de las gentes aledañas al mar y por la poesía que estos oficios envuelven. En  este texto procuraremos entonces conocer a los cambulloneros y a estos “muchachos del mar”, estableciendo, siempre que sea posible, una comparación entre el Puerto de Funchal y el Puerto de La Luz, buscando así homenajear a estos hombres-mar, de aquí y de allí, a partir de sus historias de vida y de la manera como la literatura los (d) escribe.

It is common to see around port cities, people who have dedicated themselves to varied activities and who totally depend on the flowing of vessels and passengers to survive. Among the many activities we have chosen to talk about the men who sell different articles on board of bumboats (bombote) and about the young boys who jumped into water to catch a coin (mergulhança) because of their importance to local economy and because of their magical and poetic imaginary. In this paper we have tried to find out how these two maritime activities were described and registered thus establishing a comparison between what happened in Madeira and in the Canary Islands and trying to collect and share the memory people still have on these brave men who used to spend most of their lives at sea.
