La utópica “manhattanización” de Cabo-Llanos en Santa Cruz de Tenerife para el siglo XXI / The utopian “manhattanization” of Cabo-Llanos in Santa Cruz de Tenerife during the 21st century

Resumen

El artículo que presentamos tiene como objetivo dar a conocer la realidad urbana de Cabo-Llanos a lo largo del siglo XX y XXI. Desde mediados de la centuria pasada, se apostaba por el barrio como lugar idóneo para instalar la nueva city. Se sucedieron diferentes proyectos y planes, arquitectónicos y urbanísticos, que van trazando y configurando esta parte de la ciudad. Interesantes son las propuestas planteadas a finales del siglo pasado y comienzos del presente, obras de arquitectos de fama nacional e internacional que persiguen poner a Santa Cruz a la altura de grandes capitales europeas. No obstante, muchos de estos proyectos rompedores no se han ejecutado y han hecho que, la ilusión de Cabo-Llanos de convertirse en la Gran Manzana, quede en pura utopía.

Our aim with this paper is to publish the urban reality of Cabo-LLanos over the last two centuries. Since the middle of the last one the borough council has tried to turn this district into the new “city” by proposing many differents architectural and urban projects and plans. There were interesting ideas about it at the end of the last century and at the beginning of the new one. In fact, many buildings done by world-renowned architects are trying to place at the same level Santa Cruz and the big European cities. Nevertheless, many of these projects have not actually been done and the illusion of turning Cabo-Llanos into the “Big Apple” is lost, nowadays it is just pure utopia.
