Lejos de la metrópolis: un canon en tránsito para geografías liminares / Far from the metropolis: a shifting canon for liminal geographies

Resumen

La revisión crítica a la que ha sido sujeta la idea de canon a lo largo de las últimas décadas ha evidenciado una concordancia entre la selección e imposición de modelos, características del canon en su faceta más excluyente y preceptiva, y el discurso de la metrópolis lato sensu, es decir, aquel espacio central -geográfico o social- del que dimanan, con la pretensión de universalizarse, el poder y sus representaciones. Tal análisis crítico, sin dejar de ser imprescindible, ha acabado eclipsando otros aspectos que históricamente habían pertenecido al canon: para empezar, la vinculación compleja e íntima entre poiesis y polis (es decir, entre creación artístico-literaria y construcción de la ciudad en cuanto comunidad) que el primer Renacimiento despliega inspirándose en Horacio. La propuesta aquí esbozada pretende mirar a Canarias como lugar de otro canon posible que recupere la fuerza receptiva y constructiva de esta praxis, eludiendo asimismo los enclaustramientos identitarios.

The critical debate which has been surrounding the concept itself of canon shed light on the complicity between the selection of models, with its resulting discriminatory dictate, and the discourse arising from the metropolis in the broader sense: that central space -be it geographical or social- from which both the power and its representations spread, along with the claim that they’re in fact universal. Such a critical analysis, now as necessary as ever, ended up overshadowing other aspects which historically belonged to the canon: first and foremost, the relation connecting poiesis and polis, the artistic or literary creation and the building up of the city in terms of community. The present proposal focuses on the Canary Islands as a space to experiment with a different kind of canon-making in order to regain the cultural impulse which this practice granted, while at the same time avoiding the ‘identification trap’ implied by nationalism.
