De los viajeros británicos a Canarias a lo largo de la Historia / Relative to visits paid by British travellers to the Canary Islands

Resumen

Ningún lugar de la tierra ha sido visitado tanto por tantosviajeros como las Islas Canarias. Exploradores, naturalistas, capitanes y hombres de mar británicos han estado en ellas de viaje, comercio o turismo. Muchos de ellos dejaron testimonio por escrito: bien a través de diarios, de crónicas o de narraciones, que constituyen una documentación privilegiada sobre lo exóticas y encantadoras que son las islas. Ocuparon muchas páginas en los relatos de viaje en lengua inglesa.También los residentes difundieron las excelencias climáticas y riqueza de su tierra. Vamos a analizar de una manera sucinta cómo fueron esas relaciones a través de la historia de ambos territorios, para así conocer su alcance e importancia, en especial en lo relativo a los viajes marítimos. No se trata de exponer los muchos textos escritos ni de comentar a todos los viajeros que visitaron las islas, sino de detenernos en los más distinguidos, aunque al final se da una lista de los más destacados que visitaron el archipiélago.

No other place on earth has been visited by so many travelers as the Canary Islands. Explorers, naturalists, captains of commerce and of the seas have been welcomed there as well as many, many tourists. The impressions left by their visits have been recorded in documents, books, diaries and fictional accounts, these provide a priviledged view of the exotic charms of the Islands, much of it in English. Long term residents have also spread information of the benign climate and the riches of the land. We intend to analyse, succinctly, the relations between Spain and Great Britain during recent history, especially the effect upon maritime voyages. The many written texts and commentaries will not all be discussed but it is hoped to include the most outstanding. At the conclusion, a list of the travellers to the archipelago considered to be the most distinguished will be included.
