Este artículo estudia el papel desarrollado por un inmigrante canario en la sociedad venezolana de la primera mitad del siglo XVIII. Bernardo Rodríguez del Toro, natural de Teror (Gran Canaria) llegó a convertirse en poseedor de una de las mayores fortunas dela Venezuela colonial. Comerciante y hacendado, adquirió el título de Marqués del Toro. En este trabajo se estudian sus vías de enriquecimiento y sus estrategias familiaresy sociales.

This article examines the role played by an immigrant Canary islander in the Venezuelan society of the first half of the eighteenth century. Bernardo Rodríguez del Toro, born in Teror (Gran Canaria) went on to amass one of the largest fortunes in colonial Venezuela. A merchant and landowner, he acquired the title of Marqués del Toro. In this paper, we study how he and his family became enriched and the social strategies he used.
