En este ensayo se analiza una obra desconocida para el lector canario y latinoamericano, de gran relevancia en ambas orillas del Atlántico: El espíritu del río, de la escritora Juana Fernández Ferraz, nacida en La Palma y residente en Costa Rica durante cuarenta y seis años. Esta novela costumbrista, de intención ensayística, fue concluida en 1909 y publicada en 1912. Contiene unas propuestas de gran osadía en la pluma de una mujer a principios del XX: el protagonista del relato plantea la creación de una comunidad en la selva de Brasil, regida bajo los principios del anarquismo social pacifista. A diferencia de sus hermanos Valeriano y Juan Fernández Ferraz, la obra de Juana no ha recibido la atención crítica merecida.
This essay studies the trans-Atlantic novel The Spirit of the River, a text largely unknown to readers in the Canary Islands and Latin America, yet of great relevance to both. The author, Juana Fernández Ferraz was born in LaPalma and moved to Costa Rica, where she lived for forty six years. The novel was finished in 1909 and published in 1912. The narrative ideological premise is incredibly bold for a woman writer at the beginning of the XXth century: the main character proposes the creation of a pacifist community of social anarchists in the Brazilian jungle. It is a critical essay in the formof a novel. Unlike her brothers, Valeriano and Juan, Juana Fernández Ferraz’s work has not received the critical attention it deserves.
