Recientemente, el presidente de la República Francesa Emmanuel Macron ha encargado un estudio valorativo del patrimonio cultural africano alojado en territorio francés. El documento que se ha preparado a cargo de Felwine Sarr y Bénédict Savoy, ha ido más allá del mero análisis técnico creando una polémica en torno a la restitución a sus países de origen del patrimonio expoliado durante la colonización en África. Atendiendo al potencial de esta interpelación, nuestra intención aquí es doble: primero, esbozar la problemática relación cultural de Canarias con África y segundo, apuntar a la posibilidad de la restitución de la “colección Verneau”, un considerable número de piezas canarias –prehispánicas y de después de la conquista– albergadas en algunos museos franceses. / The president of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron has recently commissioned a report about the african cultural heritage on French territory. The written document by Felwine Sarr and Bénédict Savoy has gone beyond the technical evaluation, raising controversy around the restitution of african cultural heritage plundered during the colonisation to the countries of origin. Being aware of the strong potential of the demand, our purpose is double: First, outline the often problematic cultural relationship between the Canary Islands and Africa. Second, consider the possibility of the restitution of the “Verneau Collection”, a large number of items, some of them indigenous and other from the time after the Spanish conquest of the Canary Islands, currently housed in French museums.
