Resumen

Robert Lloyd Praeger, distinguido botánico irlandés y experto en la familia de las Crasuláceas visitó Canarias en 1924 y 1926 para llevar a cabo una revisión sistemática de los veroles, los géneros Greenovia, Aeonium, Monanthes y Aichryson. Entre 1926 y 1930 publica una serie de artículos científicos sobre este grupo de plantas y en 1932 su libro An Account of the Sempervivum Group fue publicado por The Royal Horticultural Society London. En el libro Praeger cataloga 62 especies en los cuatro géneros en Macaronesia y también comenta la existencia de numerosos híbridos naturales. Su monografía es una de las publicaciones más interesantes sobre la flora canaria del siglo XX. De este trabajo, se puede decir que fue la primera monografía importante en la historia de la flora macaronésica y conjunto con las publicaciones anteriores sobre la biogeografía y origen, taxonomía, híbridos, etc. de los veroles de Macaronesia ha sido un modelo para los estudios modernos de la flora de la región. Algunos estudios posteriores han reforzado el valor y lucidez de la obra de Praeger añadiendo solamente 10 especies nuevas en todo el grupo.

The distinguished Irish botanist Robert Lloyd Praeger, expert on the Crassulaceae family, visited the Canary Islands in 1924 and 1926 to prepare a systematic revisión of the houseleeks, specifically the genera Greenovia, Aeonium, Aichryson and Monanthes. Between 1926 and 1930, he published a series of scientific articles on this group of plants and in 1932 his book “An Account of the Sempervivum Group” was published by the Royal Horticultural Society of London. In the book Praeger, he lists 62 species of the four genera in Macaronesia and also comments on the existence of numerous natural hybrids. His monograph is one of the most interesting publications on the Macaronesian flora of the 20th Century. It can be said of this work that it was the first important monograph on  Macaronesian flora and together with the author's previous publications on biogeography and origin, taxonomy, hybrids etc. of the Macaronesian houseleeks has stood as a model for modern studies of the region's flora. Several later studies have re-enforced the value and lucidity of Praeger's work adding only 10 new species to the whole group.
