La presencia constante de extranjeros en Canarias ha hecho que la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de idiomas cobrasen desde muy pronto una gran importancia en las islas. En el presente trabajo, anali­zaremos uno de los métodos que se ofertaban en la prensa de la isla de Gran Canaria en el siglo XIX para la enseñanza de la lengua inglesa. El método de series de Gouin que apareció a finales del siglo XIX destacó por su gran originalidad. Fi­nalmente, nos proponemos analizar las referencias culturales y textuales que aparecen en English Lessons on The Gouin Method (1913) de F. Thémoin y J.P. Grace-Smith, un texto para la enseñanza de la lengua inglesa que seguía los principios del método de series.

The permanent presence of foreigners in the Canary Islands contributed to the importance of foreign language teaching and learning in the islands. In this paper, we will analyze one of the methods used for teaching English, offered in the press on the island of Gran Canaria in the XIXth century. The Gouin Method, which appeared at the end of the XIXth century, was very original and in­novative. In the present article, we will analyze English Lessons on The Gouin Method (1913) by F. Thémoin and J.P. Grace-Smith, paying special attention to the cultural and textual elements of this textbook.
