Resumen

El último cuarto del siglo XIX fue un periodo crucial para la Historia de las relaciones entre Canarias y el continente americano. La crisis de la cochinilla y la falta de alternativas lanzaron a la emigración a miles de habitantes de las islas, así como la Guerra de Cuba hizo que muchos de ellos tuvieran que ir a luchar y a morir en el frente de batalla. En este artículo se analiza la importancia de estos hechos en una región tan importante en la época como afectada por ello como es el Norte de Tenerife y como la prensa conservadora de la zona crea un discurso sobre ello. Aunque el contacto con América no se limitó al intercambio de personas, sino que también se sucedieron intercambios comerciales, culturales o de ideas.

The last quarter of the nineteenth century was a crucial period for the history of relations between the Canary Islands and the American continent. Cochineal crisis and the lack of alternatives threw to emigration to thousand of islanders. Furthermore, Cuban War caused that many of them had to go to fight and die in the battle front. This article discusses the importance of these events in a region as important as affected by it as the North of Tenerife and such as the conservative press in the area make a discourse about it. Although contact with America was not limited to the exchange of people, but there were too trade, cultural or ideas exchanges.
