GALDÓS PINTOR: UN PRESENTE PARA CLAUDIO DE LA TORRE / PAINTER GALDÓS: A PRESENT FOR CLAUDIO DE LA TORRE

Resumen

Este artículo presenta un cuadro realizado por Benito Pérez Galdós, en Santander, en 1898, inédito hasta la fecha de celebración del XI Congreso Internacional Galdosiano. En él, su autor pinta algunos barcos tanto de vapor como de vela en la bahía de esta ciudad. Este cuadro había permanecido desconocido, hasta ahora, para el mundo de la investigación, en el Archivo Familiar Claudio de la Torre. Probablemente, fuera un regalo del propio Galdós a Claudio de la Torre durante sus encuentros en Madrid, pocos años antes de fallecer aquel. La intención del autor no parece otra que pintar una de las máquinas más veloces de su tiempo, el barco de vapor, junto a otros barcos de vela, representando así dos épocas, en un espacio esencial para el desarrollo y tránsito de esta tecnología en España: la bahía de Santander. / This article presents a painting created by Benito Pérez Galdós in Santander in 1898, unpublished until the date of the 11th International Galdosian Congress. This artistic work displays several steamships as well as sail boats in the bay of this city. It had remained in the Claudio de la Torre Family Archive and was hitherto unknown to the world of research. Presumably it was a present from Galdós, a few years before his death, to Claudio de la Torre during their meetings in Madrid. The intention of the author seems to have been no other than to paint one of the fastest machines of his time —the steamship— amongst sailboats, and in this way representing two eras, in a space essential for the development and transition of this technology in Spain: the Bay of Santander.
