ALBORES DE LA TERCERA ESPAÑA EN GALDÓS / GALDÓS AS A PRECURSOR TO THE «TERCERA ESPAÑA»

Resumen

La labor de crítica política del joven Galdós lo llevó tempranamente a observar el peligro de los fanatismos de ambos extremos. El liberalismo radical y el absolutismo son dos caras de una misma fiera que observa en sus reflexiones de la política actual, así como en las novelas sobre el pasado y presente español. Esas dos Españas lo sitúan en una tercera España: la de la razón frente a la barbarie y la de la moderación frente al fanatismo. Su análisis nos advierte de cómo se fue germinando la Guerra Civil del 36, que nos pronosticó en numerosos textos y explícitamente en Doña Perfecta.

En el presente artículo rastreamos dicho análisis galdosiano en artículos, novelas y obras de teatro, donde anticipa lo que escribirán quienes vivieron la Guerra del 36. Junto a fragmentos de la obra de Galdós, rescatamos testimonios de Unamuno, Machado, Ortega, Moreno Villa, C. Campoamor, Marías, Chaves Nogales o Baroja. / The critical labour of the young Galdós’s led him to an early observation of the danger of fanaticism in both political sides. Radical progressives and radical traditionalists were two sides of the same beast, which Galdós examined in his reflections about the coetaneous Spain and also in his novels about the Spanish history. Those extremist «two Spains» led him toward a warm «third Spain»: the Spain of the reason versus barbarism, the Spain of the moderation versus fanaticism. His prophetic analysis prevents us against the causes of the Civil War, as we can read in several of his works, but mainly in Doña Perfecta.

In our text, we pursue this Galdosian’s reflections throughout articles, novels and theatre works in which he anticipates warnings about extremisms, as will be claimed later for those who suffered the Spanish Civil War. So, jointly with Galdós’s works, we recover testimonies by Unamuno, Machado, Ortega, Moreno Villa, C. Campoamor, Marías, Chaves Nogales, Baroja, etc...
