UN TROZO DE LA VIDA DE GALDÓS EN LAS PALMAS / A PIECE OF THE LIFE OF GALDÓS IN LAS PALMAS

Resumen

Desde hacía tiempo existían problemas con las propiedades de la familia Pérez Galdós en Gran Canaria y, principalmente, con las de Magdalena Hurtado de Mendoza y Tate. Por esto el día 18 de octubre de 1894, después de 25 años de ausencia, Galdós viajó a Las Palmas en el vapor Pio IX y, acompañado de su hermano Ignacio, se alojó en la casa de recreo que la familia de Galdós poseía en Santa Catalina.

Todos los días se levantaba temprano para escribir y, a continuación, cogía el tranvía de vapor para pasear por la ciudad y por las calles que guardaban recuerdos de su juventud como el Colegio de San Agustín. Contempló el teatro Tirso de Molina y, atravesando la calle Triana, visitó la ermita de San Telmo y la Cofradía de Mareantes que le regaló un pequeño barco. En la sesión del 19 de octubre el Ayuntamiento de Las Palmas acordó colocar una lápida conmemorativa en la casa donde nació. La visita al Monte Lentiscal fue emotiva y, como recuerdo, se guarda una fotografía con su perro en la finca de Los Lirios. Galdós también visitó la Villa de Teror siendo atendido, el día 6 de noviembre, por el párroco don Judas Antonio Dávila.

Finalmente Don Benito embarcó en el Hespérides, el 9 de noviembre, para Cádiz prometiendo volver en 1895. No obstante, ya no regresó a su tierra natal en los veintiséis restantes años de su vida. / For a long time there were problems with the properties of the Pérez Galdós family in Gran Canaria and, mainly, those of Magdalena Hurtado de Mendoza and Tate. For this reason on October 18, 1894, after 25 years of absence, Galdós traveled to Las Palmas in the steamer Pío IX and, accompanied by his brother Ignacio, lodged in the recreational house that the Galdós´s family possessed in Santa Catalina. Every day he would get up early to write and then he took the steam tram walk around through the city and through the streets that kept memories of his youth as the Colegio de San Agustin. He gazed at the theater Tirso de Molina and, crossing the Calle Triana, visited the hermitage of San Telmo and the Confraternidad de Mareantes that gave him a small boat. At the October 19 Session City Hall of Las Palmas agreed to place a commemorative plaque in the house where he was born. The visit to Monte Lentiscal was emotional and, it has remained memory, a photo is kept with his dog on the farm of “Los Lirios”. Galdós also visited the village of Teror being attended, on November 6th, by Priest Don Judas Antonio Dávila. Finally Don Benito embarked on the Hesperides for Cadiz, on November 9, promising to return in 1895. However, he no longer returned to his homeland in the remaining twenty-six years of his life.
