Muchos críticos han destacado la presencia e importancia de las mujeres en la obra de Galdós. Sin embargo, relativamente pocos han centrado su atención en el papel de los hombres. Este artículo examina la representación de los personajes masculinos en las Novelas de Torquemada. Considera cómo éstos se asocian con varios arquetipos de la época y el concepto del «hombre nuevo», y también cómo corresponden con las mujeres en esta serie. A la vez relaciona lo que encontramos en estas novelas con lo que Galdós escribió en la prensa, notablemente en sus Obras inéditas, por ejemplo sus artículos centrados sobre la moda, y demuestra cómo un conocimiento de estos escritos enriquece nuestra apreciación de las Novelas de Torquemada. / Many critics have highlighted the presence and importance of women in Galdós’s work. However, relatively few have focussed on the role of men. This article examines the representation of the male characters in the Torquemada Novels. It considers how they can be associated with various ‘types’ of the period and the concept of the ‘new man’, as well as how they relate to the women in this series. At the same time it draws a link between what we find in these novels and what Galdós wrote in his press articles, notably the Obras inéditas, highlighting, for instance the significance of his articles on fashion, thereby revealing how a knowledge of these writings can enrichen our appreciate of the Torquemada novels.
