Toda carta es una conversación entre personas ausentes que refleja ideas, emociones que van y vienen, fecundándose unas a otras. Así ocurrió entre Galdós, Clarín, Oller y Pereda, cuyos epistolarios constituyen un sugestivo documento literario.
La imagen que esos corresponsales modelaron de Galdós está nutrida de elementos mitificadores: un Galdós 'padre' de sus obras, si bien esa mitificación lo convierte, de hecho, en 'hijo' simbólico de tales obras.
¿Cuáles fueron sus reacciones ante esos libros? Tormento despierta en Leopoldo Alas el afán por una escritura nada retórica. Por el contrario no le entusiasma Realidad, dada su hechura teatral. Oller ensalzará Fortunata y Jacinta, en cuyas páginas la 'naturaleza' lucha contra 'la civilización'.
La amistad entre Galdós y Pereda fue muy cálida, pese a las diferencias ideológicas. Los juicios que avivan en Pereda los libros galdosianos son oportunos y, a la vez, severos. What were their reactions to those books? Tormento awakens in Leopoldo Alas the eagerness for a non rhetorical writing. On the contrary, he is not enthusiastic about Realidad, given his theatrical fabric. Oller will praise Fortunata y Jacinta, in whose pages "nature" struggles against "civilization".
The friendship between Galdós and Pereda was very warm, in spite of the ideological differences. The judgments that revive in Pereda the Galdosian books are opportune and at the same time severe. He applauds Misericordia but will also reproach Realidad for its dialogism.
