LA CARICATURA GALDOSIANA EN LA PRENSA CANARIA: PERSPECTIVAS INSULARES SOBRE EL LEGADO DE GALDÓS EN EL CENTENARIO DE SU MUERTE / CARICATURES OF GALDÓS IN THE CANARIAN PRESS: INSULAR PERSPECTIVES ON GALDÓS’S LEGACY ON THE CENTENARY OF HIS DEATH

Resumen

Este artículo se enfoca sobre las representaciones contemporáneas de Galdós en las caricaturas y el humor gráfico de las Islas Canarias en el centenario de la muerte del autor. Me centro, específicamente, sobre las caricaturas de Néstor, Padylla y ‘Cho Juaá’, que se publicaron en línea y en periódicos como La Provincia (Gran Canaria) y El Día (Tenerife). Explico cómo han reflexionado, de diversas maneras, sobre la obra de Galdós, y examino cómo han vinculado el legado de Galdós a varios temas y asuntos en las Islas Canarias, sobre todo los que conciernen a la política y al patrimonio cultural regional. Finalmente, argumento que han reivindicado a Galdós como una figura icónica en las Islas Canarias del siglo XX/XXI. / This article examines contemporary representations of Galdós in caricatures and graphic humour circulated in the Canary Islands on the centenary of his death. I focus, in particular, on caricatures by three artists, Néstor, Padylla and ‘Cho Juaá’, which were published online and in newspapers such as La Provincia (Gran Canaria) and El Día (Tenerife). I explain how they have reflected, in different ways, on Galdós’s work, and I examine how they have linked Galdós’s legacy to various themes and topics in the Canary Islands, particularly those relating to regional politics and cultural heritage. Finally, I argue that these artists have claimed Galdós as a cultural icon for the 20th/21st-century Canary Islands.
