El manuscrito de Fortunata y Jacinta sigue el patrón de escritura que Galdós utilizara para otras obras. Comenzada la redacción más o menos extensa, la abandonaba en un determinado momento y empezaba a escribir otra versión utilizando el reverso de las cuartillas descartadas y otras en blanco. El estudio de esa primitiva versión (Alpha) de Fortunata y Jacinta, escrita con toda probabilidad en Santander durante los tres meses del verano de 1885, y la posición que ocupan sus páginas conservadas en los vueltos del manuscrito que va a la imprenta (Beta) o a él transferidas, resulta de especial interés para abordar una edición crítica de la novela y llegar a detectar algunos de los deslices que pasaron a la edición de 1887. / The Fortunata y Jacinta manuscript follows the same writing pattern used by Galdós in other works, that is, after writing a number of pages of the work, at some stage, he abandoned it and began writing another version using the back of the sheets of paper discarded from its previous version as well as using other blank pages. The study of this primitive version (Alpha) of Fortunata y Jacinta, probably written in Santander during the three months of the Summer of 1885, and the position occupied by the pages that were preserved on the back of the manuscript that went to the printing house (Beta) or that were transferred to it, have a special interest when addressing a critical edition of the novel for detecting some of the slip-ups that got into the 1887 edition.
