Resumen

En Fortunata y Jacinta, Galdós presenta dos personajes antitéticos y aparentemente rivales, pero hermanados por un destino dependiente, que coarta su capacidad intelectual y su libertad. Siguiendo el modelo dual finisecular, Jacinta, perteneciente a la burguesía, ha de ser el perfecto ángel del hogar, mientras Fortunata, representante del pueblo, es tipificada como objeto de placer. Ambas viven sojuzgadas por una sociedad que les niega un espacio vital donde desarrollar su individualidad, debido a su género. En este contexto, Fortunata se eleva moralmente gracias a la toma de conciencia de su propia valía. Su actitud desafiante, incapaz de adaptarse a un sistema injusto, le confiere una enorme dignidad, además de poner de relieve los abusos a los que estaban sometidas las mujeres de la época, especialmente si eran pobres. Su conducta tiene una repercusión en Jacinta, como demuestra la solidaridad entre ambas al final de la novela. / In Fortunata and Jacinta, Galdós presents two characters who are antithetical and apparently rival, but connected through the shared limits placed on their intellectual capacity and freedom. Following a common fin-de-siècle trope, Jacinta, belonging to the bourgeoisie, must be the angel of the home. At the other extreme, Fortunata, representative of the common people, is cast as an archetypal object of pleasure. Subjugated by society on account of their gender, both lack space in which to develop their individuality. In this case, Fortunata rises morally thanks to an awareness of her own worth. Her defiant attitude, unable to adapt to an unjust system, gives her enormous dignity. It also highlights the abuses to which women were subjected at the time, especially if poor. Her behavior has an impact on Jacinta, as shown by the solidarity between the two at the end of the novel.
