Resumen

El propósito de esta investigación, referida a Juan Martín el Empecinado, obra de la Primera Serie de los Episodios Nacionales de don Benito Pérez Galdós, es estudiar la presencia de un niño huérfano de dos años, el Empecinadillo, adoptado por el ejército del Empecinado, y contestar a estas preguntas: ¿Por qué aparece un niño de tan corta edad en medio de la dureza y del horror de una guerra? ¿Qué misión le ha asignado el escritor junto a estos bravos guerrilleros, a los que acompaña a todas partes?
Esta indagación ha dado como fruto el establecer las funciones encomendadas por Pérez Galdós —la función bélica, la función intrahistórica, la función humorística, la función emotiva y la función literaria— a un personaje tan pequeño, pero tan bien dibujado literariamente y de tanto calado en el desarrollo de esta historia. / The purpose of this research, referring to a Juan Martín el Empecinado, work from the First Series of the National Episodes of don Benito Pérez Galdós, is to study the presence of a two-year-old orphan, the Empecinadillo, adopted by the army del Empecinado, and answer these questions: why does a child of such a young age appear in the mid of the harshness and horror of a war? What mission has the writer assigned him along with these brave guerrillas, whom he accompanies? everywhere?
The result of this investigation has resulted in establishing the functions entrusted by Pérez Galdós, the war function, the intrahistorical function, the humorous function, the emotional function and the literary function, to a character so small, but so well drawn literary and so important in the development of this story.
