ISABEL II EN GALICIA (1858): UN VIAJE DE ESTÉTICA GALDOSIANA / ISABELLA II IN GALICIA (1858): A JOURNEY WITH GALDOSIAN AESTHETICS

Resumen

En el reinado de Isabel II en España (1833-1868) la adaptación del liberalismo fue compleja y la Corona tuvo un papel de difícil definición. Una vez que el general O’Donnell accede al poder con la Unión Liberal fue consciente de que era necesario mejorar la imagen popular de la reina, muy desacreditada a partir de las intrigas de la ‘camarilla cortesana’ con la que convivía y por su azarosa vida sentimental. En este ambiente se promovieron viajes de la familia real por la geografía española para aproximar la institución al pueblo y difundir el nation-building que venía de la mano de la cultura liberal. Entre estos viajes estuvo la visita a Galicia en septiembre de 1858; a través de la crónica oficial y otros documentos descubrimos una visita cuya estética se recreará después en el realismo galdosiano de los Episodios Nacionales (tercera y cuarta series) y Memoranda.

Under the rule of Isabella II in Spain (1833-1868), the adaptation of liberalism was complex and the Crown had a role that was hard to define. Once General O’Donnell came to power with the Liberal Union, he was aware of the need to improve the people’s view of the Queen, who was strongly discredited owing to the intrigues of the ‘court camarilla’ with which she lived, as well as her eventful love life. In this atmosphere, the Royal Family embarked on travels across Spain that were promoted with a view to bringing the institution closer to the people and spreading the concept of nation-building that came hand in hand with liberal culture. These travels included a visit to Galicia in September 1858: the official chronicle and other documents reveals a visit whose aesthetics would later be recreated under the Galdosian realism of the Episodios nacionales (‘National Episodes,’ third and fourth series) and Memoranda.
