MOTIVACIÓN ARTÍSTICA EN 'GLORIA' / ARTISTIC MOTIVATION IN 'GLORIA'

Resumen

En este trabajo se explora cómo la temática del ‘peregrino’ inspira la narrativa galdosiana en Gloria (1876). Mi presentación se guía por las aseveraciones que el mismo Don Benito le respondió a Pereda: «He querido simplemente presentar un hecho dramático verosímil».[i] Partiendo de esta aseveración, se examinará cuál es el rol de las tradiciones, al igual que lo hizo Lope en El peregrino de amor y su manera de utilizar esta motivación artística con el mismo fin. Gloria ofrece una narrativa para analizar lo que se ha llamado la diseminación de variaciones de un tema. La historia literaria ayudará a re-examinar el motivo de la convivencia fortuita y lo que yace bajo el tema del ‘extranjero/extraño’, es decir la variación del peregrino de amor. Se discutirá cómo el personaje de Daniel Morton forma parte del proceso de motivación a la vez que se le compara con peregrino de amor y se estudian las variaciones individuales.

In this work, I explore how the thematics of the ‘pilgrim of love’ inspires galdosian narrative in Gloria. I am guided here by Don Benito’s own words: «All I wanted was to present a verisimilar dramatic scene».[i] Keeping his thoughts in mind, I consider the role of traditions used by Lope de Vega in El peregrino de amor (The pilgrim of love) and the manner in which he uses artistic motivation with a similar purpose as Galdós. Gloria offers this narrative to analyze what has been termed here: dissemination of variations of a topic. Literary history will serve to discover the motive of ‘living together by chance’ as well as what underlies the theme of the extranjero/strange; that is, a variation of the ‘pilgrim’. The character of Daniel Morton will be compared to the ‘pilgrim of love’ and his individual variations.
